Hong Kong: Love it or Hate it?

This is now my 10th year of living in Hong Kong, and I feel that I now know some pros and con's. For those who are planning on coming to Hong Kong, this might give you a general view and help you along the way for packing, sightseeing, etc.

Pros
1. Hygiene
Hong Kong is Hygienic in a way that Mall's or any official buildings have hand sanitizer. Just put your hand under it and the machine will give you a hand full of sanitizer.

2. Shopping

Even though a lot of clothing, makeup, etc. is from outside of Hong Kong, the cost for them are relatively cheaper than most "higher" countries. For this reason, Hong Kong's main attraction is Shopping. The brands ranges from "high class" ( YSL, Gucci, Chanel, Dior, etc), "middle class" (ZARA, Bershka, H&M), and to "Low Class" (Maple, In Fashion, etc.)

3. Transportation

In all my life the longest I've traveled in Hong Kong was Maybe 3 hours. Hong Kong has almost any transportation you can think of. Main Transportation consists of the MTR(subway), Bus (double decker/mini), and Taxi (there's always a taxi line somewhere around the corner).

4. English

Hong Kong is relatively "English-Friendly". All major sight-seeing area will speak English, including malls. If you do go to any Island or to the Kowloon/New Territories, keep in mind that talking will be less efficient. the farther you move from Hong Kong Island, you'll hear less English.

5.Trashcans
This might sound crazy but I am literally thankful for the number of Trashcans in Hong Kong. in one street you'll see at least ten trashcans, none of the overflowing.

6. Crime

The crime rate is low for Hong Kong, even though it is a city. Probably because Hong Kong is small...

7. Age requirement
The age requirement for Hong Kong is 18. So anyone who are over 18 can go to the party central LKF to enjoy music, dance, drinks, etc.

Con's
1. Hygiene
The reason why Hygiene is also a problem in Hong Kong is because of some states of public areas. Although Hong Kong is relatively clean some streets, bathrooms, etc. will be.. lets just say not so flattering. Hong Kong do suffer some major cockroach infestation, and recently Mice has also been reported. For those who are coming to Hong Kong try not to wear Open Toe Sandals when going to places near Kowloon.

2. Pollution

Although it wasn't a major problem before, but currently Hong Kong is suffering from Pollution. Each Year at least 1200 people die of air pollution here. It is actually the account for the transportation usage here, not to mention the use of air conditioning. So for those who have asthma, bring your kit.

3. Humidity

Hong Kong Summer gets up to 35 Celsius in extreme cases. But the major problem is the Humidity. The Humidity ranges from 70%~99% during summer. So my advice, don't bring or wear clothes that soaks up any kind of liquid... trust me it won't dry. Even if it did, you'll suffer from smelling like old gym socks.

  1. Age requirement is 16... isn't it? Think about middle schoolers.
